The strength of the passport you hold helps simplify travel procedures, such as obtaining a visa for the country you want to visit or the number of countries you can enter without the need to apply for a visa in advance. Every year, the Henley Passport Index conducts a study on the ranking of all passports in the world to determine the most powerful passports for their holders, which enable them to enter the largest number of countries without complications or the need to buy a visa in advance. The Henley Passport Index evaluates 199 passports and 227 destinations worldwide to determine the nationalities that are granted the highest level of global mobility. While the official ranking is published every January, the index is updated quarterly. Passports are awarded one point for each country they can travel to without the need for a prior entry visa, or if the traveler can obtain a visa, visitor permit, or electronic travel authority (ETA) upon arrival at their destination. On the other hand, if a destination requires a visa or government approval before departure, the passport does not receive any points. Interestingly, this edition of the ranking sees Singapore rise to the top spot, with Japan dropping from first place to joint third. Italy, Spain, and Germany have also improved their positions, rising to joint second place. In January of last year, the Netherlands saw a slight decline in the global ranking, with the Dutch passport dropping from fourth to fifth place after six months. However, the third-quarter update of the Henley Passport Index 2023 sees the Netherlands reclaiming its fourth-place position. While the country’s ranking improved, the total number of points awarded to the Dutch passport remains unchanged; with 188 points, the Netherlands is on par not only with its January rankings but also with those of 2022 and 2021. This result means that Dutch citizens can travel to 188 countries around the world without the need to apply for a visa before departure. The country shares fourth place with Denmark, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Once again, Afghanistan occupies the bottom position in the ranking as the worst passport.
